In “Veneer” (2013), Micky Hoogendijk explores the duality of identity and perception through the symbolism of veils. Inspired by Roman mythology’s Janus, the god with two faces representing beginnings and endings, Hoogendijk delves into the choices we make about which side of ourselves to show. The veil in “Veneer” represents the outer layers that people wear, both tangible and intangible, to conceal or emphasize certain aspects of their identity. This photograph symbolizes the quest for sexual and religious freedoms, illustrating the duality and complexity of human identity and societal norms.
