In 2019, Micky Hoogendijk created “Trust,” a heartfelt photograph of a young girl in a kitchen, staring into space with folded hands. This image is deeply personal, as the girl represents a young Hoogendijk, and the kitchen is her childhood home on the Willemsparkweg in Amsterdam. The small, dollhouse-like kitchen evokes memories of her mother standing by the door in tears due to their financial struggles. The photograph, titled “Trust,” is Hoogendijk’s message to her younger self, reassuring her that everything will eventually be alright.

Upon revisiting her childhood home, Hoogendijk found the kitchen unchanged, instantly transporting her back in time. She placed various objects in the scene to symbolize her mother, including a copy of “Le Petit Prince,” a book that celebrates the power of imagination—a theme central to Hoogendijk’s life and work. This realization of maintaining a connection to her inner child was reinforced during her training at the Eric Morris Actors Workshop, where she learned to access her vulnerable child subpersonality, based on Carl Jung’s theories.

Hoogendijk’s ability to reconnect with her inner child has been crucial for her creativity and resilience. In her studio, which she calls her “playroom,” she taps into this childlike energy, finding freedom and joy in her work. This process allows her to transform vulnerability into strength, filling the empty spaces in her life and sustaining her artistic endeavors. Through “Trust,” Hoogendijk not only reflects on her past but also showcases the enduring power of imagination and the importance of staying true to oneself.
